Song of a Shell
by Violet Cuslidge
I held a sea shell to my ear, and listened to its tale
Of vessels bounding o’er the main and all the ships that sail.
It sang of brilliant water flowers, the bright anemones
That bloom beneath the ocean waves tossed in from seven seas.
The Caterpillar
A caterpillar crawled from an egg so small.
He was hungry and wanted to eat,
So he ate and ate all the leaves around
Grew very fat.and ready to sleep
I’m full he said and then spun a cocoon,
And went to sleep inside by the light of the moon.
All winter he didn’t make a peep.
Then spring came and the sun warmed everything
And he came out, dried his wings and flew away. . . a beautiful moth!
The Elephant
An elephant goes like this and that.
He’s very very big and he’s very very fat.
He has no fingers and he has no toes,
But goodness gracious what a nose!
Caterpiller
Little Arabella Miller had a fuzzy caterpillar.
First it climbed upon her mother.
Then it climbed upon her baby brother.
They said, “Arabella Miller put away your caterpillar.”
Grasshopper
There was a little grasshopper
That was always on the jump,
And because he never looked ahead,
He always got a bump!
The Centipede
“The best advice that I can give,”
Said the centipede’s mother,
Is to put your best foot forward,
Then another and another
And another and another,
And another
Louis Phillips
Dancin Daddy Longlegs
Daddy longlegs on my window,
Does a Tap dance on the pane,
First he scurry’s up and sideways,
Then he dances down again.
With skinny bending legs all waving,
His chubby belly-body sways.
I see him doing a wriggly action.
I could watch him dance for days!
Sometimes a song make a nice little poem to learn!

Bumble Bee
Big Burly Bumblebee buzzing through the grass
Move Over
Dragonfly
When the warm summer sun made drowsy the land,
A dragonfly came and sat on my hand.
With a blue jointed body and wings like spun glass
It lit on my fingers as though they were grass.
The Bunny
The nose of a bunny is twitchy and funny.
His furry ears flippity flop.
His tail you can see is as small as can be.
But my, how his hind legs can hop!
A Funny Bunny
Here is the Bunny with ears so finny ( 2 fingers flopped)
Here is the hole in the ground. ( fist other hand)
Each noise that he hears, he perks up his ears,
And leaps in his hole with a bound!
The Little Turtle
There was a little turtle.
He lived in a box.
He swam in a pond.
He climbed on the rocks.
He snapped at a mosquito.
He snapped at a bee.
He snapped at a minnow,
And he snapped at me.
He caught the mosquito.
He caught the flea.
He caught the minnow.
But he didn’t catch me!

The Owl
There’s a wide eyed owl with a pointed nose,
Feathers horns for ears and talons for toes.
He lives high up in a tree.
He can see a mouse far away, flap his big wings,
And say whooo, whooo
Owls
Five little owls in an old elm tree,
Fluffy and puffy as an owls can be
Blinking and winking with big round eyes
At the big round moon up in the skies.
As I passed beneath I could hear one say,
There’ll be mouse for supper today.
Then all of them hooted who oooooo whooooo whooooo whoooooo
Yes mouse for supper whooooooo whooooo whooooo whoooooo
Wild Geese
Something told the wild geese it was time to go.
Though the fields lay golden, something whispered snow.
Leaves were green and stirring, berries luster glossed,
But beneath warm feathers something cautioned – “Frost.”

BABY CHICK
Peck, peck, peck
On the warm brown egg
Out comes a neck
Out comes a leg.
How does a chick
Who’s not been about,
Discover the trick
Of how to get out?
Quack, Quack, Quack
Here comes the daddy with his great big feet. (stamp, stamp)
Neat comes the mommy with her feathers so neat.(pat hair)
Then come the babies all in a row(walk with hands waving behind back)
Waddle, waddle, waddle
There they go! ( waddle as you walk around)
The Duck
I waddle when I walk.
I quack when I talk,
And I have webbed toes on my feet.
Rain coming down makes me smile, not frown,
And I dive for something to eat!
The Box Turtle
There was a little turtle
He lived in a box
He swam in a puddle
He climbed on the rocks
He snapped at a mosquito
He snapped at a flea
He snapped at a minnow
And he snapped at me
He caught the mosquito
He caught the flea
He caught the minnow
But he didn’t catch me!
Little Turtle
Little turtle, little turtle fast asleep
The little turtle little turtle starts to creep.
Out he pokes his little head.
“What a beautiful world” he said.
Herbert the Turtle
Herbert the Turtle
Has a house on his back
He crawls in the soil
And his tail leaves a track.
If it starts to rain,
He pulls in his head.
When the days grow cold,
He finds a lake bed.
Snug in the sand,
He’ll sleep until spring
And come out when the robin sings.

Seeds
Seeds are funny, funny things,
Some have stickers
Some have wings
Some are big
Some are small
Some round and flat
Some like a ball.
Some are hidden inside of fruit
Some in pods or underground roots.
Some seeds are foods
And good to eat,
Like corn or beans
Or nuts for a treat.
Five Little Peas
Five little peas in a pea pod pressed,
One grew, two grew, and so did all the rest;
They grew…and grew…and did not stop,
Until one day the pod went…POP!
Oats, Peas, Beans and Barley Grow
Chorus
Oats, peas, beans, and barley grow,
Oats, peas, beans, and barley grow,
Do you, I, or anyone know how
Oats, peas, beans, and barley grow?
First the farmer sows his seed,
Then he stands and takes his ease,
He stamps his feet,
And claps his hands,
And turns around to view his land.
Chorus
Walking with a partner,
Walking with a partner,
Make a ring, oh make a ring,
Oh, while we happily dance and sing.
I Will Plant a Garden
(to the tune of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm”)
I will plant a garden green,
Then I’ll watch it grow.
I’ll dig some holes here in the dirt,
In a nice straight row.
With a dig-dig here,
And a dig-dig there,
Here a dig, there a dig,
Everywhere a dig-dig,
I will plant a garden green,
Then I’ll watch it grow.
I will plant a garden green,
Then I’ll watch it grow.
In the hole I’ll drop a seed,
Then each seed I’ll sow.
With a drop-drop here,
And a drop-drop there,
Here a drop, there a drop,
Everywhere a drop-drop,
I will plant a garden green,
Then I’ll watch it grow.
I will plant a garden green,
Then I’ll watch it grow.
I’ll water each plant one by one,
They’ll sprout up in a row.
With a squirt-squirt here,
And a squirt-squirt there,
Here a squirt, there a squirt,
Everywhere a squirt-squirt,
I will plant a garden green,
Then I’ll watch it grow.
Little Brown Seeds
Little brown seeds so small and round,
Are sleeping quietly under ground.
Down come the raindrops
sprinkle, sprinkle, sprinkle.
Out comes the rainbow,
twinkle, twinkle, twinkle.
Little brown seeds way down below,
Up through the earth they grow, grow, grow.
Little green leaves come one by one.
They hold up their heads and look at the sun.
The Little Plant
In the heart of a seed,
Buried deep so deep,
A tiny plant
Lay fast asleep.
“Wake,” said the sunshine,
“And creep to the light.”
“Wake,” said the voice
Of the raindrops bright.
The little plant heard
And it rose to see,
What the wonderful,
Outside world might be.
Planting
I took a little seed one day
I put it in a pot of dirt,
In hopes that it would grow.
I poured a little water
To make the soil right.
I set the pot upon the sill,
Where the sun would give it light.
I checked the pot most every day,
And turned it once or twice.
With a little care and water
I helped it grow so nice.
Dick Wilmes
My Garden
This is my garden, I’ll plant it with care,
Here are the seeds I’ll plant in there,
The sun will shine,
The rain will fall,
The seeds will sprout and grow up tall.
The Seed
How does it know,
This little seed
If it is to grow
To a flower or weed,
If it is to be a vine or a shoot,
Or grow into a tree
With a long tap root?
The Garden
A little seed for me to sew.
A little earth to make it grow.
A little hole
A little pat.
A little wish and that is that.
A little sun
A little shower
A little while,
And then . . . a flower!
Peas
Five little peas in a pea pod pressed.
One grew, two grew, and so did all the rest.
They grew and grew and they did not stop,
Until all of a sudden . . . the pod went pop!
Garden
What does a garden need to grow?
Bright warm sun shining down.
What does a seed need to sprout?
Water sprinkled all about.
The seed grows roots into the ground,
And reaches for the sun without a sound!
The Garden
What makes a garden grow, grow, grow?
Lots of work with a shovel, rake and hoe!
Seeds that are carefully planted in a row!
That makes a garden grow grow grow!
What does the seed need to grow a sprout?
Warmth from the sun and water that falls about.
What brings a seedling up from the ground?
The light of the sun shining down!
What makes the food to feed the plant?
Sunlight is turned to glucose in the leaves of green.
What feeds the plant from the soil?
Roors drink the water from the rainfall.
This makes a garden grow grow grow and grow!
A Daffodil
A little yellow cup,
A little yellow frill,
A little yellow star,
And that’s a daffodil.

The Run-Away Turkey
“Gobble, gobble,” said wobble wobble turkey, (flap fingers under chin)
“Today is Thanksgiving Day.
And I’ll get cooked for dinner if I don’t run away.( stir food, use hands to sneak away)
Over the hill wobble turkey jogged,
And he stopped by an old oak tree.
“ I’ll hide behind these branches so no one can find me.”
The branches shook – then Frisky squirrel came running down the tree.
“ If you will share my food,” she said, “ I’ll be happy as can be.”
Wobble Turkey spread his feather tail ( spread fingers)
And sat right down to eat.
He never guessed Thanksgiving Day would bring him such a treat! ( rub stomach)
Gobble, Gobble, Gobble
A turkey sat on a backyard fence and he sang this sad sad tune.
Thanksgiving is coming gobble gobble gobble gobble,
And I know I’ll be eaten soon.
Gobble gobble gobble gobble gobble gobble gobble,
I don’t like Thanksgiving Day!
Gobble gobble gobble gobble gobble gobble gobble,
I woiuld like to run away!
Gobble Gobble Turkey
I’m a gobble gobble turkey from my head down to my toes
In back I have some feathers that I shake where e’re I go!
I gobble up my breakfast and I gobble all the day.
And when I get tired of gobblin then I gobble out to play.

THIS IS A FUN HALLOWEEN SONG:
WITCHES BREW
Dead leaves, seaweed, rotten eggs too,
Stir them in my witches brew,
I’ve got magic, Alakazamakazoo.
Spider webs, moldy bread, mucky mud too,
Stir them in my witches brew,
I’ve got magic, alakazamakazoo.
ooooo my witches brew
ooooo What’s it gonna do to you? BOO!
Floor wax, thumb tacks, purple paint too,
Stir them in my witches brew.
I’ve got magic, alakazamakazoo!
Finger nails, lunch pails, apple cores too
Stir them in my witches brew.
I’ve got magic, alakazamakazoo.
Wrinkled prunes, mushrooms, motor oil too,
Stir them in my witches brew.
I’ve got magic, alakazamakazoo
Oooooo My witches brew,
Oooo What’s it gonna do to you? Boo!
It’s Halloween (sung to Farmer in the Dale)
The pumpkin’s in the patch
The pumpkin’s in the patch
Oooooo It’s Halloween,
The pumpkin’s in the patch.
Other verses:
The pumpkin takes the witch
The witch takes the cat
The cat takes the bat
The bat takes the ghost
The ghost takes the treats
We all say trick or treat.

LITTANY FOR HALLOWEEN
From ghoulies and ghosties
And long-leggedy beasties
And things that go bump in the night,
Good Lord, deliver us!
Things that Go Bump in the Night
by “Graffiti Poet”
I’ve never been one for being afraid,
Or running away from a fight,
But I shiver with fear, whenever I hear
Things that go bump in the night.
You can call me a fool, if I hear a ghoul
Creaking its foot on the stair,
I’m outta that place, at double quick pace
You’re not going to keep me in there.
I know they’re not real, it’s just how I feel
We all have our crosses to bear,
At the first chilly breeze, I’m down on my knees
Reciting the words of a prayer.
If I saw a ghost, what would frighten me most
Would be if they noticed me too,
I’d probably faint, seeing something that ain’t;
Something you shouldn’t see through.
The worst thing I’ve seen, in life or on screen
Is a poltergeist turning her head,
I kept on the light, for many a night
And always checked under my bed.
You may laugh and scoff, if it’s spooky I’m off
At the first sign of something not right,
It’s true what I’ve said, I’m afraid of the dead
And things that go bump in the night….
Pumpkins
We bought a fat orange pumpkin
The plumpest sort they sell.
We neatly scooped the inside out
And only left the shell.
We carved a funny funny face
Of silly shape and size,
A pointy nose, a jagged mouth, and two enormous eyes.
We set it in a window and we put a candle in.
Then lit it up for all to see our jack-o-lantern grin.
Jack=O=Lantern
I am a pumpkin big and round.
Once upon a time I grew on the ground.
Now I have a mouth, two eyes, and a nose.
What are they for do you suppose?
With a candle inside shining bright,
I’ll be a jack-o-lantern on Halloween night

Five Little Pumpkins
Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate,
The first one said,”Oh my it’s getting late.”
The second one said,”There are witches in the air.”
The third one said,But I don’t care.”
The fourth one said,”Let;\’s run and run and run,”
The fifth one said,”I’m ready for some fun.”
Whooooo went the wind and out went the lights,
And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.
The Pumpkin
Sometimes big and sometimes small,
But always round and orange.
When children fix my famous grin,
Then I’m a scary fellow.
Three Little Witches
One little, two little, three little witches,
Flying over haystacks,. Flying over ditches.
Sliding down moonbeams without any hitches.
Hi – ho Halloween is here!
Skeleton Parade
by Jack Prelutsky
The skeletons are out tonight,
they march about the street,
With bony bodies, bony heads
and bony hands and feet.
Bony bony bony bones
with nothing in between,
Up and down and all around
they march on Halloween.
The Witches’ Spell
Act IV, Scene 1 from Macbeth (1606) by William Shakespeare
A dark Cave. In the middle, a Caldron boiling. Thunder.
Enter the three Witches.
1 WITCH. Thrice the brinded cat hath mew’d.
2 WITCH. Thrice and once, the hedge-pig whin’d.
3 WITCH. Harpier cries:—’tis time! ’tis time!
1 WITCH. Round about the caldron go;
In the poison’d entrails throw.—
Toad, that under cold stone,
Days and nights has thirty-one;
Swelter’d venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i’ the charmed pot!
ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.
2 WITCH. Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg, and owlet’s wing,—
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.
3 WITCH. Scale of dragon; tooth of wolf;
Witches’ mummy; maw and gulf
Of the ravin’d salt-sea shark;
Root of hemlock digg’d i the dark;
Liver of blaspheming Jew;
Gall of goat, and slips of yew
Sliver’d in the moon’s eclipse;
Nose of Turk, and Tartar’s lips;
Finger of birth-strangled babe
Ditch-deliver’d by a drab,—
Make the gruel thick and slab:
Add thereto a tiger’s chaudron,
For the ingrediants of our caldron.
ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.
2 WITCH. Cool it with a baboon’s blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.

Pictures in the Night
Little stars are shining bright,
Forming pictures in the night.
Twinkling and sparkling through the air-
Little Dipper and Little Bear . . .
How many stars will I see?
There are so many picture stories for me!

HOLIDAY SENSES
At holiday time it’s nice to see . . .
A lovely decorated Christmas tree.
At holiday time it’s nice to hear . . .
Jingle bells on flying reindeer.
At holiday time it’s nice to feel . . .
Santa’s beard to see if it’s real.
At holiday time it’s nice to lick . . .
A peppermint candy stick.
At holiday time it’s fun to smell . . .
Gingerbread cookies with icing gel.
Isn’t it great! Isn’t it fine!
To use our five senses at holiday time.
