1 teaspoon baking soda
Keep the solution in the refrigerator and bring to room temperature before use.
The following is a good inhalant. Pour boiling water over the herbs and stir. Lean over the bowl and tent the towel over your head. Keep eyes closed, since peppermint steam can irritate them. Breath deeply, moving closer to the bowl as the water cools. Blow your nose as needed, don’t sniff! When cool, add more hot water or pour the water and herbs into a saucepan keeping the heat very low to steam – and breathe the steam when you walk by.

Bone Health – Sardines are relatively inexpensive and a good source of nutrients difficult to find in many other foods. They’re a rich source of bone-building vitamin D, that plays an essential role in bone health by helping to increase the absorption of calcium, and a very good source of phosphorus, a mineral important to strengthening the bone matrix, and vitamin B12 that also supports bone health.
Benefits of Consuming Ginger
If you suffer from loose bowels, tend towards edema or swellings, and
retain water as well as have a constant running or drippy nose (particularly when outside) and suffer from very low energy. You would do well drinking ginger tea or adding ginger to your meals.
Ginger is for colds that exhibit more cold signs than hot ones: chills but no fever, running nose that is clear watery mucus with lots of sneezing.
If you have a sore throat, thick yellow mucus or fever, ginger is not the spice for you. You need a cooling spice like peppermint to clear the heat.
The best way to consume ginger for this pattern is in its fresh/raw form. Fresh grated or sliced ginger in hot water with a bit of lemon and raw honey can do wonders for the onset of a cold. Fresh ginger is easier to grate for tea if frozen.
This soup is easy to make and works wonders for the common cold. Keep some in the freezer and have green onions, astragalus, fresh ginger and garlic on hand through the winter. Build your blood and energy and kick that cold to the curb.
Ginger Soup
1-2 inch piece of Fresh Ginger sliced thinly.
4 Green onions sliced into medium sized pieces.
1-2 garlic cloves peeled and chopped
6 cups Chicken bone broth or regular chicken stock
Place ginger, onions, garlic and mushrooms (if you choose) in a pot and add a small amount of broth. Simmer until ingredients are softened. Add the rest of the stock and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook for 20-30minutes. Sip on broth throughout the day and feel better! You can eat the ginger pieces for some extra heat. Add other vegetables to make it more of a meal. Don’t add much salt as salt tends to bring things deeper into the body and this is more about pushing out.
Add in dried or fresh mushrooms for an extra boost of energy.
Add 4-5 pieces of Astragalus (Huang Qi) to the broth as it is simmering to boost your immune system and energy.
Organic Chicken Bone Broth – Organic chicken bones simmered for 24 hrs with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. For one pound of bones, you need about 12- cups of water or just fill the pot to cover the bones instead of measuring it out. Once it has simmered for 24 hours, skimming off the fat and oil on the surface, strain, and store in glass jars or freeze for later use. Save the ends of your vegetables in a bag in the freezer and add them to the stock for a bit more of a nutritional boost!
Broth for Vegetarians -Make a vegan “bone broth” using vegetable stock or the ends of your veggies simmered for 8-10 hours and add things like seaweeds, mushrooms, and miso to up the nutrient content.
The Medicine in Your Cup
Ginger is a naturally warming food with a pungent taste. Fresh ginger is good at treating the common cold when presented with chills but not fever! It also has the benefit or warming and soothing the digestive system helping with nausea, upset stomach, and appetite.
Garlic is a natural antibacterial and is immune boosting. It is considered warm and is great for reducing swellings, removing toxicity and carcinogens, strengthening the digestive system and moving our qi (energy).
Green Onion/Scallions are a warm and pungent herb great for shaking the common cold that is cold in nature (chills). Eat cooked or raw. Green onions add flavor to food and works well with ginger for warming.
Astragalus Root is found at a Chinese market or herbal store. It has sweet and slightly warm properties and immune boosting properties. David Bouley is on a mission to change the way we eat. One of his inflammation-fighting tricks is using a powerful fighting agent, turmeric. The New York City culinary star is opening a new restaurant with an emphasis on teaching people how to cook healthier at home. He has logged about 500 infused-oil recipes.
David Bouley’s turmeric oil recipe:
1 cup powdered turmeric
10 Tbsp. avocado oil
10 Tbsp. grape seed oil
10 Tbsp. olive oil
1. Fill a water bottle with the oils and turmeric.
2. Let sit for two weeks. And, voila, it’s ready to use.
He combines turmeric with high-quality oils because the benefits of the spice are transported more easily through healthy fats. Aside from turmeric, he counts mint oil (to calm the body), lemon (to boost immunity), and vanilla (another inflammation fighter), as kitchen regulars.

Anti-inflamation Smoothie
Pineapples contain bromelain, an enzyme that is a powerful anti-inflammatory. This famous pain relieving enzyme has been synthesized and isolated into supplements to treat inflammation and pain naturally. Ginger contains very powerful anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols. These substances are believed to explain why so many people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis experience reductions in their pain levels and improvements in their mobility when they consume ginger regularly.

According to Dr. Andrew Weil recent research on both turmeric and curcumin is very promising: Curcumin seems to delay liver damage that can eventually lead to cirrhosis, according to preliminary experimental research at the Medical University Graz in Austria.
Kansas State University research found that adding certain spices, including turmeric, can reduce the levels of heterocyclic amines — carcinogenic compounds that are formed when meats are barbecued, boiled or fried — by up to 40 percent.
Rodent studies at the University of Texas indicate that curcumin inhibits the growth of a skin cancer, melanoma and slows the spread of breast cancer into the lungs.
Researchers from the University of South Dakota have found that pretreatment with curcumin makes cancer cells more vulnerable to chemo and radiotherapy.
Epidemiologists have hypothesized that the turmeric that is part of daily curries eaten in India may help explain the low rate of Alzheimer’s disease in that country. Among people aged 70 to 79, the rate is less than one-quarter that of the United States. One new study suggests curcumin is valuable for arthritis treatment.

For A Stronger Heart
Catch some sunshine! It could protect your heart, according to a new study in Nature Medicine. A group of mice was exposed to a light box t of illumination similar to the outdoors. When researchers induced heart attacks in the mice, the light-treated rats showed signs they had been protected from heart attack–induced tissue damage. Researchers discovered when you go in the sun that heart-protective proteins (called Period 2 proteins) appear more often in your body. The light-treated mice had 4 times as many Period 2 proteins compared to mice who weren’t exposed.
Here’s how it works: When you go into cardiac arrest, your heart delivers less oxygen to the body. Period 2 proteins help your body be more efficient at using oxygen, so you can survive on less, says lead researcher Tobias Eckle, Ph.D., professor at the University of Colorado Denver.
Beet Juice for Blood Pressure
Researchers have discovered that drinking 17 ounces of beetroot juice a day can significantly reduce blood pressure. The findings could have major implications for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. It is the ingestion of dietary nitrate contained within beetroot juice — and similarly in green, leafy vegetables — which results ultimately in decreased blood pressure.
The decrease in blood pressure was due to the chemical formation of nitrite from the dietary nitrate in the juice. The nitrate in the juice is converted in saliva, by bacteria on the tongue, into nitrite. This nitrite-containing saliva is swallowed, and in the acidic environment of the stomach is either converted into nitric oxide or re-enters the circulation as nitrite. The peak time of reduction in blood pressure correlated with the appearance and peak levels of nitrite in the circulation.
Hypertension causes around 50 per cent of coronary heart disease, and approximately 75 per cent of strokes. Nitrate is likely to underlie the cardio-protective effect of a vegetable-rich diet. Drinking beetroot juice, or consuming other nitrate-rich vegetables, might be a simple way to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system, and may be an additional approach in the modern day battle against rising blood pressure.
Blood Pressure Lowering Juice
2 Stalks of Celery
1/2 beet
2 Carrots
1/2 green apple
lemon
Juice all ingredients and enjoy.
Health benefits of celery juice – Balances body’s blood pH, neutralizing acidity. Acts as the perfect post-workout tonic as it replaces lost electrolytes and rehydrates the body with its rich minerals. Celery is known to contain at least eight families of anti-cancer compounds. Among them are the acetylenics that have been shown to stop the growth of tumor cells. Phenolic acids which block the action of prostaglandins that encourage the growth of tumor cells. And coumarins which help prevent free radicals from damaging cells. The phytochemical coumarins prevent the formation and development of the colon and stomach cancers. This humble pale juice has been shown to effectively and significantly lower total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol. The natural laxative effect of celery helps to relieve constipation. It helps relax nerves that have been overworked by man-made laxatives. The potassium and sodium in celery juice helps to regulate body fluid and stimulate urine production, making it an important help to rid the body of excess fluid. The polyacetylene in celery is an amazing relief for all inflammation like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, asthma and bronchitis. Kidney function: Celery promotes healthy and normal kidney function by aiding elimination of toxins from the body. While eliminating toxins, it prevents formation of kidney stones. Lower blood pressure: Drinking celery juice every day for a week significantly helps lower blood pressure. A compound called phtalides help relax the muscle around arteries, dilating the vessels and allowing blood to flow normally. To be effective, drink the juice for one week, stop for three weeks, and start over.

Food for the Heart:
Cranberries Researchers found that men who drank 3 cups of cranberry juice daily raised their HDL (the good kind) cholesterol levels by 10 percent, which in turn lowered their risk of heart disease by 40 percent. Plant compounds called polyphenols are believed to be responsible for the effect.
Whole Grains At Tulane University, researchers found that people who ate 4 or more servings of whole grains a week had a 22 percent lower risk of developing heart disease than those who ate the foods once a week or less.
Grapefruit Eating one grapefruit each day can lower your total cholesterol and LDL levels by 8 and 11 percent, respectively, lowering your risk of heart disease and providing you with more than 150% of your daily-recommended vitamin C.
Water Researchers found that drinking 5 or more 8-ounce glasses of water a day could lower the risk of heart disease up to 60 percent— the same drop you get from stopping smoking, lowering your LDL cholesterol number, exercising, or losing a little weight. Replace half of what you drink with water and you’ll save 23 pounds per year!
Fish Omega-3 fats in tuna and other fish and flaxseed help strengthen the heart muscle, lower blood pressure, prevent over clotting, and reduce the level of potentially deadly inflammation in the body.
Fruits high in vitamin C, like oranges and pineapple: According to research from England, people with the most vitamin C in their bloodstreams are 40 percent less likely to die of heart disease.

Relieve and Prevent Varicose Veins:
Lose weight. Eat low-fat foods and add more fruits and vegetables to your diet. Drink green juices that are alkalizing and improve blood circulation. Drink LOTS of water daily.
Foods That Help: Green vegetables, cherries, blueberries, blackcurrants, blackberries, cranberries, kiwifruits, citrus fruits, bell peppers, pineapple, beetroot, whole grains.
Juice Recipe:
½ medium-sized beetroot
½ small pineapple
2 ribs celery
½ yellow bell pepper
¼ lemon
½-inch ginger root

Top 6 Foods That Can Naturally Unclog Arteries
Your arteries continually transport essential nutrients and oxygen one needs from the heart to the rest of your body. Here are 6 natural foods that will help cleanse and unclog arteries and help prevent a heart attack or stroke:
Organic Asparagus “Asparagus works within the 100,000 miles of veins and arteries to release pressure, thereby allowing the body to accommodate for inflammation that has accumulated over the years.” says Shane Ellison, an organic chemist and author of Over-The-Counter Natural Cures. It helps ward off deadly blood clots.
Organic Pomegranate “Pomegranate contains phytochemicals that act as antioxidants to protect the lining of the arteries from damage”, explains Dr. Gregg Schneider, a nutritionally oriented dentist and expert on alternative medicine.
Turmeric “The spice turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory,” Dr. Schneider says. “It contains curcumin which lowers inflammation—a major cause of arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries.)”
Spirulina A daily 4,500 mg dose of this algae helps relax the artery walls and normalize blood pressure. It could help your liver balance your blood fat levels.
Organic Cranberries are potassium-rich and can help reduce cholesterol levels. Regular consumption may help reduce your overall risk of heart disease by up to 40 percent.
Organic Watermelon A Florida State University study found that people given a 4,000 mg supplement of L-citrulline (an amino acid found in watermelon) lowered their blood pressure in just six weeks. Researchers say the amino acid helps your body produce nitric oxide, which helps widen blood vessels.
Natural therapy for opening the veins of the heart:
1 cup lemon juice
1 cup ginger juice
I cup garlic juice
1 cup organic Apple vinegar

The array of healthy herbs and spices that our plant world has to offer us expands our palates and perks up our dinner plates and also perform important restorative functions throughout our bodies to help keep us healthy, vibrant, and disease-free.
These as especially noteworthy for two reasons: Each is distinctly potent for healing, make excellent additions to your favorite meal dishes and they’re all easy to find and easy on the wallet.
1.Turmeric has profound anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric’s pain relieving, immune-modulating, heavy metal-detoxifying, and cancer-preventing benefits are pronounced. A relative of ginger, it is among the world’s most therapeutic natural substances. There are at least 580 different ways in which turmeric can help the body, which include its ability to prevent and fight cancer, mitigate radioactive exposure, protect against disease-causing inflammation, and bolster brain health. Turmeric has long held premier status in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for nearly 6,000 years.
2. Chili Pepper gives food a spicy kick! A compound found in chili pepper known as capsaicin stops the body from producing damaging inflammation. Capsaicin helps relieve pain and promote nerve health, and is an excellent choice for people with arthritis. Capsaicin, found in cayenne, jalapeños, and several other nightshades, has been shown in studies to fight cancer. Capsaicin is powerfully chemo-protective, as well as a promoter of apoptosis (causes cancer cells to commit cell “suicide.)”
3. Rhodiola Rosea, known as “golden root,” has the generalized effect of helping the body to effectively navigate a volatile and stressful world. It can directly combat the damaging effects of environmental pollution inside our bodies and help keep our minds clear and blood pressure levels in check. It helps the body to burn fat while producing more energy, lowers cortisol levels, improves brain function, and fights depression. It aids red blood cells in delivering more oxygen to muscles. Studies show that rhodiola invokes an anti-inflammatory response in the body, helping to boost performance and improve muscle recovery. The cortisol-lowering properties of rhodiola help balance thyroid function and optimize hormone production.
4. Ginseng – There are 11 different varieties of this well-known herb. It is one of the most popular native remedies in the world and is used to treat headaches, promote fertility, improve digestion, and boost energy levels, strengthen the immune system, and aid in sexual healing and rejuvenation. Ginseng has an amazing ability to keep disease-causing inflammation at bay. Ginseng is a powerful anti-cancer herb that improvs the function of natural killer cells while minimizing oxidative stress throughout the body.
5. Ginkgo Biloba has a solid track record of therapeutic use that extends thousands of years. Ginkgo biloba exhibits powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-modulating effects that are well-documented in scientific literature. People use ginkgo regularly to help improve memory, mood, and brain function. Science suggests that this herb can help increase energy and improve focus. Ginkgo stands out from the rest for its ability to prevent, and even reverse, cognitive decline and neurodegeneration, while helping to lift one’s spirits and improve feelings of calm and contentment. Nervous system disorders like fibromyalgia respond positively to ginkgo.
#6: Bacopa is another Ayurvedic herb that shows incredible healing benefits for brain health as it relates to concentration and memory. Bacopa has an adaptogenic effect in helping to mitigate stress and stress-related health conditions, emphasized by its ability to modulate the brain’s production of dopamine and other “feel-good” chemicals as needed. It helps relieve anxiety and depression, and studies show it can help ward off degenerative brain conditions like Alzheimer’s disease.
#7: Periwinkle has an extensive history of use in Ayurveda. Periwinkle is loaded with vinca alkaloids that are powerfully cytotoxic − meaning they kill cancer cells. In addition to helping lower blood pressure and fighting off pathogens, vinca alkaloids are so effective in healing cancer that they are said to be the second-most-used class of cancer “drugs” in modern medicine.
#8: Astragalus contains an array of saponins, flavonoids, polysaccharides, and other unique compounds that boost immunity, protect against heart disease, ward off bacteria and viruses, and improve cellular communication. It has been shown to break down and eliminate tumors and is known for its ability to target the inflammatory responses that, in many cases, cause healthy cells to go rogue and become cancerous in the first place.
#9: Holy Basil is often brewed as a tea to help calm the nerves and balance blood sugar levels. It can help to restore proper functionality to both the thyroid and adrenal glands. What makes holy basil special in this regard, along with rhodiola, ginseng, and some of the other adaptogenic herbs is the fact that this herb isn’t a stimulant, yet its stress-relieving properties help normalize adrenal function, which in turn helps boost energy levels, focus, and mental stability. Holy basil helps fight cancer, exhibiting powerful anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties that protect nearly every system of the body from breakdown including vital organs and the cellular system. Antioxidant phytonutrients in holy basil help to promote healthy gene expression, as well as inhibit cancer metastasis and tumor growth. They’ve even exhibited a direct effect in destroying cancer cells.
#10: Lemon Balm is an herb that hails from the mint family. This healthy herb is one that many people use aromatherapeutically to promote calm, peace of mind, and restful sleep. Lemon balm helps sharpen memory, boost alertness, and improve overall mood and is a powerful antioxidant that prevents cancer-causing free radical damage throughout the body thus helping to prevent the formation of chronic disease. Lemon balm serves as a potent liver tonic aiding in the liver’s production of two of the most important antioxidants that our bodies need for health: glutathione and superoxide dismutase.
#11: Rosemary has an intoxicating aroma. Rosemary helps improve cognitive performance and mood, and helps one think better and perform daily tasks more efficiently and effectively. Two key constituents of rosemary, caffeic acid and rosemarinic acid, are potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that help protect the body against free radical damage. Rosemary contains a substance known as carnosol that helps rid the body of toxic substances that can lead to the formation of breast cancer. Rosemary possesses generalized anti-tumoral properties that help to prevent cancers of the colon, liver, stomach, skin, and blood.
